On the railjet train from Vienna to Innsbruck, Austria

July 2, 2012

There is wi-fi in first class, which we had to go on because we had to make sure there would be room for our big bags. We are not your ideal, efficient travelers!

Then train trip from Vienna to Innsbruck is about 4 1/2 hours. We have exactly 3 minutes to unload 4 big bags and 2 carry ons in Innsbruck, before the train takes off.

The countryside is already green and gorgeous, and we are only about 30 minutes out of Vienna. There are farm fields and some bales of hay and corn.

In Vienna, the kids got out of school for the summer last Friday, and yesterday and today we saw big groups of kids traveling. Off to summer camp, I suppose.

Someone had asked about the food in Vienna. We've had Schnitzel, boiled meat stew, ham (speck) or salami sandwiches, pancakes (really crepes) that were filled with veggies or meat, and gyros and pastas. Vienna is huge, so there are restaurants of every nationality there. There is a lot of fried food in Vienna, and they love their meat, cheese, bread, and potatoes! Oh, and coffee, lots of coffee houses with wonderful pastries. Mark had apple strudel twice, and I had a roll cake with whipped cream and jelly (like my grandmother and mom used to make). It was so warm in Vienna, everywhere you went everyone was eating ice cream or gelato.

We will be staying at Austria Classic Heiligkfeuz, a family run hotel in Hall in Tirol, about 20 minutes outside of Innsbruck (Hall is recommended by Rick Steves). The hotel is supposed to have great views and a pool. We can walk to Hall or take a bus ride in to Innsbruck. Sounds good, right? I'll let you you know how it actually turns out. We will be outside of Innsbruck until Saturday, when we take a country train to Oberndorf, by Kitzbuhel.

Passing part of the lake area outside of Salzburg.

Business Class has very few people. Guess we are the only crazy ones with a mass of oversized luggage! Actually, there is only one old lady and a businessman in this whole car with us.

Beautiful countryside between Salzburg and Innsbruck.

It is getting more mountainous, and I keep humming "The Lonely Goater" yodeling song from the Sound of Music, I can't help it!

Below is the view from our hotel room!
